Martha Bátiz es mexicana pero vive en Canadá desde 2003. Es autora de las colecciones de cuentos A todos los voy a matar (Ediciones Castillo, 2000), De tránsito (Terranova Editores, 2014, Mención de Honor en el International Latino Book Award, 2015) y Plaza Requiem: Stories at the Edge of Ordinary Lives (Exile Editions, 2017, Primer lugar en Best Popular Fiction in English en el International Latino Book Award, 2018).
Su novela Boca de Lobo, premiada en el prestigioso certamen Casa de Teatro de Santo Domingo, cuenta con siete ediciones en total: cuatro en español (Ed. León Jiménes en República Dominicana, 2007; Instituto Mexiquense de Cultura, 2008; Editorial INK, 2015; Lugar Común Editorial, 2019), y traducida al inglés como The Wolf’s Mouth (Exile Editions, 2009), al francés como La Gueule du Loup (Lugar Común Editorial, 2018), y una nueva edición al inglés como Damiana’s Reprieve (Exile Editions, 2019).
Martha supervisó la traducción y edición del volumen Desde el norte: narrativa canadiense contemporánea (UAM, 2015) y participó en el comité editorial de las exitosas antologías de literatura hispano-canadiense Historias de Toronto (Lugar Común, 2016) e Historias de Montreal (Lugar Común, 2019)
Fue becaria del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes en el área de narrativa (1993-1994), del Centro Mexicano de Escritores (1994-1995) y en el programa de Jóvenes Creadores del FONCA (1995-1996). Martha fue la primera mexicana en recibir un accésit en el Certamen Internacional de Cuento Miguel de Unamuno de Salamanca, España, por «La primera taza de café».
En Canadá ha recibido becas literarias del Ontario Council for the Artsy y ha sido finalista en tres ocasiones del concurso de cuento CVC-Exile. Es doctora por la Universidad de Toronto, profesora universitaria y traductora certificada por la ATA.
Martha Bátiz was born and raised in Mexico City, but has been living in Toronto since 2003. Her first book was A todos los voy a matar (Castillo Press, 2000). Her novel Boca de lobo received the Casa de Teatro award in Santo Domingo and was originally published in Spanish (Dominican Republic, 2007, and Mexico, 2008). In 2019 it was released in a new print edition by Lugar Común Editorial. It has been translated and published in English as The Wolf’s Mouth (Exile Editions, 2009) and Damiana’s Reprieve (Exile Editions, 2019), and in French as La Gueule Du Loup (Lugar Común Editorial, 2018).
Her second short-story collection in Spanish, De tránsito (Terranova editores, 2014), received an honorary mention in the International Latino Book Awards in 2015. Martha Bátiz has since written her first short-story collection entirely in English, Plaza Requiem: Stories at the Edge of Ordinary Lives (Exile Editions, 2017), which won the International Latino Book Award for Best Popular Fiction in English in 2018.
Martha edited the anthology Desde el norte: Narrativa canadiense contemporánea (UAM, 2015), and is also part of the editorial committee of the successful books Historias de Toronto and Historias de Montreal (Lugar Común, 2016 and 2019, respectively).
She holds a PhD in Latin American Literature and is an ATA-certified literary translator. Besides being the founder and instructor of the Creative Writing in Spanish course currently offered by the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto, she is a part-time Professor at York University/Glendon College. In 2014, Martha was featured in Latinos Magazine among the Top Ten Most Successful Mexicans in Canada. In 2015, she was chosen as one of the TopTen Most Influential Hispanic-Canadians.

The nineteen stories in No Stars in the Sky feature strong but damaged female characters in crisis. Tormented by personal conflicts and oppressive regimes that treat the female body like a trophy of war, the women in No Stars in the Sky face life-altering circumstances that either shatter or make them stronger, albeit at a very high price. True to her Latin American roots, Bátiz shines a light on the crises that concern her most: the plight of migrant children along the Mexico–U.S. border, the tragedy of the disappeared in Mexico and Argentina, and the generalized racial and domestic violence that has turned life into a constant struggle for survival.
