Patricia Laurent Kullick (Tampico, Tamaulipas,1962) es una escritora mexicana. Pertenece al Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. Ha publicado los libros de cuentos Ésta y otras ciudades, Están por todas partes, El topógrafo y la tarántula e Infancia y otros horrores.
Sus primeras novelas fueron El circo de la soledad y El camino de Santiago; esta última fue galardonada con el Premio Nuevo León de Literatura en 1999 y años más tarde, fue publicada en inglés por Peter Owen Publishers y reeditada por Tusquets en 2015. En este mismo año publicó con Tusquets La giganta.
Patricia Laurent Kullick (Tampico, Tamaulipas, 1962) is a Mexican writer. She belongs to the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte. She has published the short story books Ésta y otras ciudades, Están por todas partes, El topógrafo y la tarántula and Infancia y otros horrores.
Her first novels were El circo de la soledad and El camino de Santiago, which was awarded with the Premio Nuevo León de Literatura in 1999 and years later, it was published in English (Santiago’s Way) by Peter Owen Publishers and re-edited by Tusquets in 2015. In that same year,Tusquets published her book La giganta.

La Giganta
La Giganta, vendedora de cosméticos y libros a domicilio, nació con el don de la fertilidad. Gracias a Étienne, un francés, procreó diez hijos. Ella lucha contra sus demonios: la peste de piojos que desea exterminar con DDT, su afición al tequila para sobrellevar la tristeza y la recurrente idea de acabar con la vida de sus hijos. Pero serán sus vástagos quienes, sin proponérselo, le darán una lección de amor y valentía. Enfrentarán la vida desde su trinchera, en la que sólo cuentan con las armas que la infancia les ha prodigado: la inocencia y el ingenio en su estado más puro. Esta historia, narrada desde el diáfano pensamiento de una niña de once años, conmueve por la forma en que aborda personajes que luchan por subsistir y merecer un lugar en el mundo del que han sido expulsados, incluida Valeria, la bebé, para quien su vestido rojo es quizá lo más cercano a la felicidad.
La Giganta, a woman who sells cosmetics and delivers books to her customers’ homes, was born with the gift of fertility. Thanks to Étienne, a French man, she procreated ten children. She struggles with her demons: the lice she wishes to exterminate with DDT, her love for the tequila that helps her bear her sadness, and the recurrent idea of putting an end to the lives of her children. But, it will be precisely her offspring who, without intending to, will giver her a lesson of love and bravery. They will face their lives from their own trench, where the only weapons they can count on are the ones childhood has given them: innocence and ingenuity in their most pure form. This story, narrated from the diaphanous thought of an eleven-year-old girl, moves the readers because of the way in which it presents the characters who fight to survive and be worthy of a place in the world from which they have been expelled. This includes Valeria, the baby, for whom perhaps the closest thing to happiness is her red dress.
El camino de Santiago
El camino de Santiago: «Él soy yo y yo soy él.» Santiago, dueño de la razón, el ego, el deseo y la voluntad, habita un resquicio de la mente de la protagonista. Catorce años atrás, ese mismo espacio de su imaginación lo ocupaba Mina, quien se esfuma tras un intento fallido de suicidio dejándola a merced de Santiago. Al encontrar refugio temporal en sus amantes, tendrá que lidiar paralelamente con su celoso invasor interno, dispuesto a hacer lo imposible por mantener el imperio sobre el cuerpo y la personalidad de su huésped, mostrándole «fotografías» de su pasado, tan reales como ficticias, y haciéndola despertar en medio de vívidas alucinaciones que arriesgarán su vida. Con una madre ausente y desapegada, un padre que llevó la tortura educacional como estandarte y cinco hermanos de quienes imitó la «normalidad» y la sonrisa, tendrá que aprender a crecer hasta adquirir la fuerza necesaria para buscar la salida al perturbado laberinto de su psique.
Santiago’s way: «He is me and I am him». Santiago, owner of reason, ego, desire, and will inhabits a crevice in the mind of the protagonist. Fourteen year earlier, that same space in her imagination was occupied by Mina, who vanishes after a failed suicide attempt, leaving her at the mercy of Santiago. While she finds temporal shelter with her lovers, at the same time she will have to deal with her jealous internal invader who is willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the empire over the body and personality of her guest, going from showing her «photographs» of her past, both real and fictional, to forcing her to wake up in the midst of vivid hallucinations that will risk her life. With an absent and detached mother, a father who carried an educational torture as a banner, and five brothers whom she used as an example to imitate «normalcy» and their smile, she will have to learn how to grow up until she is strong enough to exit the disturbed maze of her psyche.
